Days after a gunman killed 13 people at Fort Hood military base in Texas, information surfaced that the suspect, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, attended the same mosque as two Sept. 11 hijackers in 2001. Hasan held his mother's funeral at the mosque in Falls Church, Va., that year. He remains hospitalized after the Nov. 5 attack in which 29 others were wounded.

Meanwhile, Sen. Joe Lieberman said he would begin an investigation into whether the Army missed signs that Hasan embraced an increasingly extremist view of Islamic ideology. Lieberman's remarks came after Hasan's classmates who participated in a 2007-2008 master's program at a military college complained to superiors about what they considered to be his anti-American views. According to the classmates, Hasan gave a presentation that justified suicide bombing and said that Islamic law trumped the U.S. Constitution.

Hasan was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center outside Washington, D.C., for six years before being transferred to Fort Hood in July. He was scheduled to be deployed for Afghanistan to help soldiers with combat stress, the Army said. Soldiers reported that the gunman shouted "Allahu Akbar!" -- an Arabic phrase for "God is great!" -- before opening fire.

Officials credited the quick action of Fort Hood Police Department Sgt. Kimberly Munley with stopping the deadly shooting. She was nearby and able to respond quickly. Relatives said Hasan felt harassed in the Army because of his Muslim faith. In a statement Nov. 6, his family said his alleged actions were at odds with the way he was brought up.
