WASHINGTON - Blizzard warnings spanned the Mid-Atlantic early Wednesday as the second major snowstorm in less than a week barreled into the region, leaving more than 10 inches (25 centimetres) of new snow in northern Maryland before dawn and threatening a similar whiteout for New York City.

ANGRA DOS REIS, Brazil (AP) — A rain-soaked slab of hillside collapsed on three houses and an upscale waterfront lodge after New Year celebrations on an island resort in this city near Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 19 people, authorities said. Another mudslide elsewhere in the city killed 11.
