A pair of masked gunmen overpowered two prison guards outside Hamilton General Hospital Tuesday morning and escaped with a prisoner charged with a history of violent offences.

Fawad Ahmed Nouri, 25, was a prisoner at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre. He is considered armed and dangerous, and police are warning the public not to approach him or anybody with him.

Nouri had been taken to the hospital Tuesday morning for a scheduled appointment, Hamilton police said.

He was being escorted from the hospital by the guards at around 11:20 a.m. ET, when two masked men armed with black handguns came out of the hospital, pushed them to the ground and grabbed Nouri, according to a statement released by police.

They fled in a vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Correction Services, hitting an ambulance in the process, police said.

The men dumped the car at the corner of Birge Street and Victoria Avenue North. They then got into a silver Hyundai Tiberon, which was last seen heading east on Birge Street, police said.

The guards weren't seriously hurt in the altercation, police said.

Nouri is described as six-foot-one, 163 pounds, and of Middle Eastern descent.

The two men who helped him escape are also believed to be of Middle Eastern descent, and were wearing civilian clothing, police said.

Police are asking anybody with information about Nouri's whereabouts to call 911.

Nouri was arrested with another man, 26-year-old Todd Fenty, in connection with an armed robbery at a Tim Hortons outlet in Hamilton.

During that robbery, suspects exchanged gunfire with police and led officers on a high-speed chase.

Nouri faces a number of charges stemming from the incident, including four counts of robbery and one count of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He has previous convictions for armed robbery.
