(Nov. 2) - Giant jellyfish sank a Japanese fishing boat as its crew tried to haul in a net full of dozens of the massive sea creatures, according to a newspaper reported Monday.

The Diasan Shinsho-maru capsized off the coast of eastern Japan, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported. The three crew members were plunged into the sea but picked up by another trawler, the paper said, citing a Japanese report.

The crew had been fishing for Nomura's jellyfish, which can weigh up to 440 pounds. The enormous jellyfish have inundated Japanese waters this summer. Biologists say that water and climate conditions likely boosted their breeding grounds.

Experts say the Nomura's jellyfish's numbers may be increasing as its traditional predators, which include sea turtles and certain species of fish, decline.
