What began as a report of suspicious activity at Calgary's Chinook Centre led to a foot chase, an arrest involving a stun gun, and the seizure of $30,000-worth of cocaine.

Mall security noticed two men acting suspiciously while sitting in a 2008 Toyota Corolla on Thursday afternoon in the west parking lot of Sears, Calgary police said Friday. The driver left the car, while the passenger then slid into the driver's seat and sped off.

Security cameras were able to continue monitoring the car as it stopped in the parking lot of a car wash a few blocks away. The driver got out, carrying a black bag, ran south and entered a restaurant in the 6000 block of Macleod Trail S.E.

When a Calgary police officer followed to question the man, the man threw the black bag to the ground and tried to flee. The two got into a struggle during which police say the suspect tried to grab the officer's gun several times.

The suspect broke free and was chased by the officer into a neighbouring business, said police.

The officer deployed a Taser, which gives an electric shock, but it had no effect on the man. After a second struggle, the Taser was used again to no avail.

The suspect was finally arrested after an extended struggle. The man was found to be wearing body armour, said police.

From the bag tossed by the suspect, police seized a loaded handgun, 1.5 kilograms of cocaine valued at $30,000, 20 grams of marijuana and about $9,033 in cash.

Investigators said Friday that the suspicious behaviour noticed at the mall parking lot was actually a carjacking and drug theft. They found a second handgun concealed in the centre console of the Toyota belonging to the victim of the carjacking.

Charges are pending against both men, said police.
