The man, who police say was mentally disabled, climbed onto a wall surrounding the park and fell 13 feet into the bear's space. After he was attacked, police defended him by opening fire on the bear, injuring the animal and forcing it to retreat into its cave.

Paramedics assist the man, who suffered injuries to his leg and head. He was later treated at a nearby hospital. The bear was being treated at the park in Bern.

Officials rescued a lone llama, pictured, from the 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado on Oct. 3.
