Some progress has been made in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run collision that turned what should have been a time of joy for a B.C. family into one of shock and sadness, Surrey RCMP say.
That was cold comfort for more than 400 family, friends and community members who gathered at a memorial service in Delta on Saturday to mourn, remember and celebrate the lives of Dilbag Singh, 61, and his wife Bakhshish Kaur Badh, 60, who were killed two weeks ago in the crash.
"You ask any any child who's lost both their parents at the same time .... It's so surreal it's unimaginable, unimaginable," son Raminder Badh said Saturday.
The fatal crash occurred July 12 as the joyful couple was looking forward to the wedding of one of their daughters.
Bride-to-be Rupi Badh was driving her parents and sister Varinder home from a celebration for the upcoming nuptials when a car plowed into their vehicle from behind, sending it hurtling into a power pole.
Her parents died at the scene, while Varinder was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Acura, which flipped from the impact, and a passenger fled on foot. Police brought in dogs in an unsuccessful attempt to track the two.
On Saturday, RCMP returned to the scene of the accident, stopping cars and hoping to turn up a witness to the collision, which Rupi Badh believes was precipitated by street racing.
Following the crash, she told police she checked her rear-view mirror and saw nothing. Seconds later, she said, she saw two cars driving alongside one another toward her.
RCMP have not revealed much about the cause of the accident, but said at the time speed was a factor.
"We haven't made any arrests yet," Sgt. Roger Morrow said Saturday. "We have, however, finally spoken to the owner of the car, which was a white Acura, the vehicle that precipitated this event and took the lives of these two people. We've spoken with that individual, along with his counsel."
The family hopes to see the driver brought to justice soon.
"If this was an accident - if this was a slippery road or if the guy had a heart attack or something happened, where he slipped or something happened - if could understand it," Raminder Badh said Saturday. "If it's old age, I could understand this.
"But in my mind, this is murder - straight-out murder."
