Sheen broadcast himself to the masses on Saturday and Sunday nights in a live chat show he has christened "Sheen's Korner." Sheen says that the show, broadcast on Ustream, may become a nightly event.
In total, more than 1.2 million people watched the debut show, live and recorded, a Ustream spokesman told USA Today. Among the highlights: Sheen showing off a new tattoo that says (what else?) "winning."
But the critics -- and by critics we mostly mean bloggers and Twitterers -- are less than delighted with Sheen's new venture.
"The truly inane webcast 'Sheen's Korner' -- a misspelled word, now that's komedy! -- is the actor's new outlet for yammering and cracking himself up," PopEater's Christine Fenno complained. Fenno also winced at Sheen drinking from a child's sippy cup during the broadcast, allegedly left behind by one of his twin sons after they were removed from his house. "Sorry, Charlie, but the loudest 'Two and Half Men' laugh track wouldn't make that funny," Fenno scolded.
The Hollywood Reporter cataloged the show's six "most awkward moments," including Sheen's overuse of his catchphrase "winning." "Once mildly funny, it has officially been beaten into the ground. Shark has been jumped."
"Barring some insane new development, 'Sheen's Korner' marks the beginning of the end of our national obsession with Sheen's breakdown. Its momentum, Internet-driven as it is, requires a constant churn of new catchphrases and meme-fodder. In an entire hour of 'Sheen's Korner,' not one new thing came out of Sheen," Gawker's Adrien Chen wrote.
Beware: Even if "Sheen's Korner" is canceled soon online, Sheen has been talking to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban about launching a new show, or some other partnership, on Cuban's cable station HDNet. Cuban is undaunted by the criticism for "Sheen's Korner."
"Everybody wants to critique a Web show that got put together in a few hours," Cuban told ESPN. "That's not the point. It gave him a chance to be himself and have some fun. The thing I like the most about Charlie is that he just loves to mess with the media. You guys fall hook, line and sinker."
