A Chinese baby that weighs as much as a six-year-old is being held for observation at a hospital in the country's Hunan province.

According to his mother, Cheng Qingyu, ten-month-old Lei Lei was a normal weight at birth, but his ravenous appetite has since seen him balloon to 20 kg.

"No matter whatever he grabs, he unconsciously puts it in his mouth," said Cheng.

"His most favourite thing is to eat."

Lei Lei, now nicknamed the "Michelin Baby" is currently undergoing tests to determine if there is an underlying medical condition that would explain his rapid weight gain.

Despite his impressive weight, Lei Lei is not the heaviest baby in the world. That title is held by Karan Singh of India who weighs in at 24 kg.
